Induction speech to China – the ICD tree        1

President Zhou, registrar Chen, officers, directors and fellows of section XIII, fellows-elect, family and friends.

Have you ever had a dream – one that you’ve had before?  Allow me to share with you a dream that I have had several times recently. Please open your minds and your imagination as I tell you about a tree.

This is not an ordinary tree.  It is a special tree - a magical tree. In fact, it can be many trees at the same time. It is tall and stately, has strong branches and beautiful leaves. It has lovely flowers, at times, and bears wonderful fruit. It is the ICD tree.

To keep this as simple as possible to understand, I will make my special tree - a banyan tree. If it does not meet all of the descriptions just mentioned, remember it is a magical tree. It could just as easily be an oak tree or a maple or even a tall pine tree – for in a dream they can all be special – all be magical.

My banyan tree is now 91 years old. The seed was carefully selected by a wonderful gardener – Louis Ottofy. He had a horticulturist friend named Tsurukichi Okumura – who helped him in the selection. The seedling was well tended and soon was reaching for the stars. Its branches grew large and reached outward. They grew so heavy, they sent down aerial roots to reach the ground for more support. Suddenly there was a new tree, separate from – but still connected to – its parent. The aerial root of one branch – the China branch – fell on very good soil and that tree – within a tree – is doing very well. It, too, is special and magical. Each tree in this banyan complex has its own gardeners. My role this year is to be the chief gardener of the central or parent tree along with my dedicated crew. President Zhou and her talented helpers look after the Chinese tree.

The very biggest branches of our special tree often send out branches of their own so the magical banyan tree – or rather the magical ICD tree – gets bigger, stronger, better and more beautiful.

Now, all trees give back to the world. They provide shade and shelter, comfort and protection. They fill us with a feeling of awe with their beauty and give us a sense of strength and pride. They provide nutrition through their fruits and nuts and give oxygen to the world.

Our magical tree does all that – and more.

It is a:

√ tree of knowledge – helping us share dental knowledge world wide

√ tree of service – helping us provide charitable works and humanitarian projects

√ tree of friendship – helping us cultivate cordial relations within the profession

√ tree of insight – helping us recognize distinguished service to the profession and to the public worldwide

√ tree of standards – helping us uphold the highest standards of professional competence and personal ethics

√ tree of love – helping us respect and understand one another regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, language or culture.

As much as our special I.C.D. tree gives, it requires little.  Still it does need some care. Real trees need water, nutrients and occasional pruning. Our special tree needs to feel the pride, honor and sense of ownership of its many parts – our fellows (*). It needs to know that the present fellows (*) respect the contributions of all who have gone before them, caring and nurturing the special I.C.D. tree in its younger days.

As I was waking, I realized our special tree represented our International College of Dentists’ organization and objectives. I.C.D. is an international fellowship of dentists united by common goals and objectives. More than fellowship, though, is the fact that it is an honorary organization –  the world’s preeminent and oldest international honorary dental organization.

One does not join I.C.D. One is invited to fellowship by recognition of their record of academic excellence, leadership abilities, history of service in their community, personal ethics and professional accomplishments.

Therefore the first thing a nominee should feel on invitation to the fellowship of the college is pride. Your peers have accorded you a very high honor. I sincerely hope that your feel that pride and realize that you have received that honor.

I congratulate each of you.

A brief message to the new fellows:

Today, you joined your colleages in the ICD section VI or ___

Be aware that you are now also part of a much larger international organization.

Celebrations, like this ___, happen in many parts of the world.  Your ICD fellowship is really in a worldwide fraternity.

We all subscribe to the same objectives, the same core values.  Be aware of your status.  You have brothers & sisters in many parts of the globe.

Wear you lapel pins proudly.

You never know who you will meet or where they are from, but you will recognize each other.

Attend ICD meetings worldwide

Expand your horizons

Have a wonderful evening everyone and again congrtulations to the new fellows.

Everyone in this ballroom is proud of you.

智慧之树——在世界范围内帮助我们分享牙科的知识;

服务之树——帮助提供我们慈善事业工作和人道主义救济;

友谊之树——帮助我们在同行之间培养诚恳的关系;

洞察之树——帮助我们认识给予同行和公众的卓越的服务;

标准之树——帮助我们维持高标准的职业技术能力和个人的道德水平;
